In the area of smart earth, we carried out a series of leading work on smart earth framework, smart city and smart coalmine applications.
(1) As to smart earth framework, we first proposed the "national spatial information infrastructure (NSII, 1996)", "digital Beijing" and "Digital Olympics" (2003). Furthermore, the SIG-based digital city service system, Grid-based intelligent spatial information service and national spatial information infrastructure were developed as highlight demonstrations.
(2) As to smart city, we mainly focused on four aspects: urban air quality modeling and forecasting, carbon footprint management analysis and simulation, the risk assessment model of regional water circulation, research of mobile health and cloud service model. For air quality research, we resolved the causes of the haze in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province and proposed a pollutant concentrations prediction model based on machine learning algorithms. To resolve the problem of population exposure risk to air pollution, we established a risk mathematical model for calculating the population exposure risk and spatial distribution. For carbon footprint research, we used fuzzy neural network to explore the impact of the carbon footprint of urban areas. An urban area carbon footprint loop feedback control closed system is built to realize wisdom city management. For the water risk research, regional water risk assessment models and methods are established to provide a scientific basis for the study of response measures of climate change and national security based on deep learning. For mobile healthcare and cloud service model, we proposed the concept of "cloud-linked healthcare index" and key technologies of “data-driven, precision medical and healthcare”.
(3) As to smart coalmine, we proposed the theory of gray geographical information system and gained significant achievements on key technologies like 2DGIS, 3D visualization, thematic map processing and underground hazards forecast and warning methods. We developed Longruan GIS software which has been applied in more than 80 Chinese energy groups and 1300 large and medium-sized coal mines. The market sharing rate of Longruan GIS is in the leading position in Chinese coalmine industry.
We have won 19 national/provincial awards for scientific and technological progress, including “Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress in Chinese Universities” and “Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress in Coalmine Industry in China”. More than 140 scientific papers and 9 books were published. Besides, our team has trained a large number of scientific and technological innovation pioneers, and are leading top-level design and overall planning in the new round of China's smart earth (city) frontier exploration.
